Genealogy events: metro Atlanta March 2012

 Family historians and genealogists mark your calendar for the following events available in the metro Atlanta area March 2012:

9 March – “Georgia’s Delegates to the Constitutional Convention of 1787” will be presented by Joanne Smalley, Professional Researcher, at the Lunch Learn Lecture Series. The Friends of Georgia Archives History sponsors this monthly program. It is free from 12:00p.m. until 1:00p.m. Georgia State Archives, 5800 Jonesboro Rd, Morrow, GA 30260, call 678-364-3730.

10 March – “Genealogy Writing and Publishing Workshop” presented by the R.J. Taylor, Jr. Foundation will be hosted by the Genealogy Society of Cobb County Georgia. See the Cobb County website for details.

12 March – “Using U.S. Federal Records to Locate the Townland of Your Irish Ancestors” will be presented by Donna Moughty. The Friends of the National Archives Southeast Region presents this webinar. Webinars are viewed from your computer at home. It is free starting at 7:00p.m. please register at the Friends’ website.

17 March – Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society, Metro Atlanta Chapter will present “Developing Research Strategies” a HANDS ON genealogical workshop in conjunction with the monthly meeting. Please register. The workshop will start at 10:00a.m. at the National Archives at Atlanta, 5780 Jonesboro Rd, Morrow, GA 30260. For registration and details see the AAHGS website.

17 March – Clarke-Oconee Genealogical Society (COGS) Expo will be held from 10:00a.m. until 4:00p.m. at the Campus View Church of Christ, 1360 Lumpkin St, Athens, GA 30604. Learn about area history, genealogical techniques, and resources. Browse book tables; ask question about software, publishing, and societies. The COGS Expo is free.

19 March – the Genealogy Study Group will meet at the Cofer Library, 5234 LaVista Rd, Tucker, GA  30084.  Wally Buckner will present the program on photograph organization and enhancements. Everyone is welcome to attend the meeting at 10:15a.m. Plan to join the group at an area restaurant for lunch.

19 March – “Researching Your Scots-Irish Ancestors” workshop sponsored by the Friends of the Hall County Library System will be held at the Spout Springs Library Branch, 6488 Spout Springs Rd, Flowery Branch, GA 30542. 20 March – Mera Cardenas, Executive Director of the Arabia Mountain Heritage Area Alliance, will present a program on the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area. Sponsored by the DeKalb History Center, Old Courthouse on the Square, 101 E. Court Sq, Decatur, GA 30030. The Lunch and Learn programs are free. Bring your lunch. The program is from 12:00p.m. until 1:00p.m.

24 March – The Annual Meeting of the Friends of the National Archives-Southeast Region, Inc. will be held at the National Archives at Atlanta, 5780 Jonesboro Rd, Morrow, GA 30260 at 10:00a.m. Mary Evelyn Tomlin, Public Programs, will present a program on the 1940 Census (to be released April 2, 2012).

27 March – Karen Molohon will present the program on “1940 Census.” The Cobb County Genealogical Society General Meetings are held at 7 PM on the fourth Tuesday of the every month except December at the First Presbyterian Church, 189 Church Street, Marietta, GA 30060.

31 March – “1812: America’s Forgotten War for Independence” a workshop will be presented by Shane Bell, Archivist. The workshop will be held from 1:00p.m.until 2:00p.m. at the National Archives at Atlanta, 5780 Jonesboro Rd, Morrow, GA 30260.
