I believe you need to attend university to get a degree in genealogy, but one needs to have at least studied history before going into it. There are genealogy societies around – check with your local library, newspaper etc. Hope this helps.
Genealogy isn’t usually a degree major. It is, however, a subfunction of history, anthropology, sociology, and geography. Brigham Young University has a BA in Family History and Boston U. offers a certificate in genealogical studies. Most genealogists don’t have a degree in genealogy though.
BYU teaches some of their family history courses online – http://ce.byu.edu/is/site/courses/free.cfm – more than a few are free! Free is a great price. They also offer full-credit genealogy courses in the history department http://ce.byu.edu/is/site/courses/university.cfm?subject=10000051 not free and pretty demanding.
You can gain a professional certification in genealogy – BCG is the standard in the US. http://www.bcgcertification.org/certification/index.html A degree isn’t required at all but it would certainly help.
Joining the Association of Professional Genealogists is a good place to start. http://www.apgen.org/
