DNA Testing Explained at Genealogical Society meeting today in Nevada City

By: Nevada County Genealogical Society

February 12, 2013 – How to use DNA information to learn more about your family’s ancestry and geographical origins is the subject of the Tuesday, Feb. 12 meeting of the Nevada County Genealogical Society. Jim Rader will discuss the different types of available tests, what they reveal and how to interpret the results. The 6:30 pm meeting will be held in the Community Room of the Madelyn Helling Library in Nevada City.

Topics will include genetic markers on mitochondrial DNA, which is passed down each generation from mother to child, to reveal your direct maternal deep ancestry, and markers on the Y chromosome, which is passed down from father to son, to reveal your direct paternal deep ancestry. A printed handout will provide links to websites with information on the average percent DNA shared for different types of cousins, “The Rules of Genetic Inheritance,” and more.

The Society meets on the second Tuesday of every month. For more information, call Helen Martini at 273-0855 or visit http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cancgs/.
