Morning News
The Pee Dee Chapter, South Carolina Genealogical Society will meet Sunday, Oct. 14 at 3 p.m. in the conference center of Pee Dee Federal Savings and Loan, 106 East Court Street in Marion, across from the Marion County Courthouse.
Roger Payne of the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) will be the guest speaker and will explain how genealogists can use the GNIS database of place names. The pubic is invited to join the meeting.
Those who use maps to locate cemeteries, churches, streams, small communities, and such for their research will not want to miss this program. He will explain how GNIS is used by sites familiar to most genealogists, including the USGS Topographical maps, Google Maps, Findagrave.com, and the discontinued Tiger Maps that many researchers fondly remember.
