Springfield genealogy reaches across the country, around the world
|As Springfield family history and genealogy researchers we spend most of our time and energy here in the Springfield, MO, area. However, we each realize that all of our research cannot be done here, locally, exclusively. Many of your ancestors followed migration routes, normally east to west, in the USA, but also across the country and sometimes around the world. Today I want to share a couple of issues with you that addresses this situation.
My friend, Boston Genealogy Examiner, Robin C. Mason, wrote a neat article, compiling the names of others across the country, including yours truly, who write genealogy columns in their local areas: “Beyond the Hub: meet other Genealogy Examiners.” If you have ancestors you are researching in any of these areas, states, or Canada, you might want to follow their writing or even ask them a question. We all write to help other folks with their research, so be sure to check it out. If you subscribe to the ones of interest, you will get notice of when they publish their articles. Thanks to Robin for sharing for the benefit of each of us.
I have written earlier about genealogy tourism – travel guided by an interest in seeing where your ancestors lived. This may be to another country or it may be to another state in the USA from your Springfield area location. Genealogy tourism is a part of a broader travel agenda, for many, known as heritage tourism, which includes history, culture and natural aspects of the location visited. For example, my ninth great-grandfather was Roger Conant, founder of Salem, Massachusetts (see photo). I could find out a lot more about him by visiting Salem, personally.
For your information, I have begun a new title as Springfield Heritage Tourism Examiner where I will regularly write about this kind of travel, including travel for genealogy reasons. I hope you will enjoy these new stories as well.
